The Gus Owen Stephens Memorial Foundation was founded by Scott, Elizabeth, and Lucy Stephens with the mission to help children and their families cope with life-limiting illness. After losing their infant son and brother Gus to a rare genetic condition, they decided to help other families and began creating in-hospital spaces that felt like home for families to say goodbye called “Butterfly Bereavement Rooms” at area hospitals.
Their idea grew and Marmon Mok was tasked with conducting a study for a Pediatric Palliative Care Program at The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio (CHofSA), the only freestanding children’s hospital in the region. They desired to create a program that offered emotional, physical, and mental health support to children who were coping and living with chronic and terminal illness and their families, a program that can help them walk the journey of their “new normal.”
