Since its original construction in 1990, Christa McAuliffe Middle School had not recieved any major renovations. The Southwest ISD was looking to update the building, expand its student capacity from 900 to 1,200, and upgrade the facilities to provide a better experience to its students. Marmon Mok worked with the owner to assess the facility, program and priorities and create a renovation/addition plan to fit their budget and goals. We added three brand new areas and renovated a few existing spaces to accommodate the growing programming necessities. Our team also provided a cost-efficient solution to integrate the new and existing areas and make them look consistent.
To keep the campus fully operational during construction, work was strategically phased and portable classrooms were used to temporarily relocate students. Adding three portables to the four existing units allowed for the complete renovation of each main classroom wing, each completed within an 18-week window, so the entire project finished in one school year.
