The Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD needed to accommodate the growing student population at J. Frank Dobie Jr High School and expand its capacity from 1,100 to 1,400. One of the main design challenges was to reuse as much of the existing facility as possible to save cost while at the same time updating the facilities and creating a fresh image. We designed a two-story classroom addition which included updated classrooms, computer labs, reconfiguring and enhancing the existing food servicing areas, and physical education locker rooms. Our team worked with the school’s administration to devise a phasing plan that scheduled demolition and major construction projects during the summer months so that school/student activities could remain in operation during the school year.
