Bonham Academy is a PK–8 charter school within San Antonio ISD and is named after one of the defenders of the Alamo. The campus was originally constructed in 1889 and is located in the King William Historic District. Marmon Mok expanded the school’s capacity to support a 550-student population with a new two-story addition that includes five classrooms, faculty office space, a music room, an art studio, a black box theater, and science and computer laboratories. Renovations to the existing building also improved the kitchen and cafeteria, as well as the administration suite.
The design of the new addition respectfully reflects the historic 1915 structures by mirroring key architectural details, including brick selection and window size and spacing, to ensure a cohesive campus aesthetic. To honor the historic, colorful, and festive character of the surrounding community, and to highlight the school’s visual and performing arts focus, a vibrant metal “curtain” in neighborhood colors wraps the Black Box Theater as a beacon for the campus and its community.
