University Health Retama Hospital is one of two prototype full-service hospitals for adults and children. To optimize construction-related costs and ongoing operational efficiencies, the hospitals and their adjacent medical office buildings are identical in layout and overall design.

The hospitals are designed with room to grow emergency and surgical services and add additional floors. At initial operation University Health Retama Hospital will have 167 beds, but the potential for future expansion can provide up to a total of 287 beds. The integrated medical office building will be available for University Health and its affiliated physician practices, as well as for private practice providers. The new hospitals will have an open medical staff model so physicians may request a medical staff appointment, allowing them to perform procedures and admit patients.
