Marmon Mok is proud to announce that the University Health Women’s and Children’s Hospital has been recognized for excellence in healthcare design, winning the thirteenth annual IIDA Healthcare Design Awards. These prestigious awards acknowledge design firms for their creativity and innovation in healthcare facility design and have honored Marmon Mok, in association with ZGF Architects, in the Hospital – Women’s category.
“The healthcare environment is constantly changing, yet the global demand for quality care combined with the experience of the patient and care staff within the space remains essential,” said IIDA Executive Vice President and CEO Cheryl S. Durst, Hon. FIIDA. “The ingenuity and effectiveness demonstrated by these winning firms showcase their ability to intertwine functionality with well-being, increasing the benchmark for the future of healthcare design every year.”
Projects were reviewed by a panel of healthcare design professionals, including Spellman Brady & Company Project Manager and Senior Designer Christa Barr, IIDA, CHID; Veterans Health Administration Leasing Development & Design Interior Designer, Julie Barfuss, IIDA; and Lee Health Facilities Planning and Design Interior Design Specialist, Paul Cooper, IIDA, CHID.
“This year’s winners transformed the healthcare environment through their strategic placement of color, texture, and artwork,” Cooper said on behalf of the jury. “Their projects not only evoke a feeling of comfort and safety, they demonstrate an understanding of the technical demands of these spaces.”

Crafted with precision by artist Michael Szivos of SoftLab, the CODA Healthcare Merit Award is well-deserved for “Nest,” a hanging artwork commissioned as the key piece for the Women’s and Children’s Hospital at University Health. The artwork’s design supports the mission of University Health’s Salud-Arte: Art of Healing program, which aims to inspire healing, hope, and trust. The sculpture is made of thin shell laser-cut aluminum pieces, which were assembled in a woven pattern similar to a bird’s nest. The artwork’s inspiration comes from the way birds build nests, lay eggs, and nurture their young.
“Nest” is one of over 5,000 art objects integrated throughout University Health’s campuses and clinics, and it will be the focal point of our new main campus entrance.
Marmon Mok has been ranked #68 on ENR Magazine’s list of Top 100 Green Firms for 2022. The Top 100 companies are ranked according to revenue for design services generated in 2021 from projects that are registered with or certified by a third-party organization that sets standards for measuring a building’s or facility’s environmental impact, energy efficiency, or carbon footprint. This ranking marks Marmon Mok’s first time on the list, and we are excited to continue our efforts through design to make a sustainable impact on the built environment.
